Wilde in Love

Deeply amusing new series from Eloisa James -- I can't wait to see what's next for the Wilde family after this debut. Things I love about it: Willa and Lydia are intelligent, funny, women who are also good at the marriage mart. The improper behavior they indulge in is never thoughtlessly undertaken, and leaves a great deal in Willa's hands. I think this may be the only book I've ever read where a pet skunk is hugely important to the plot. All of those things read more true to the time period than most romance novels, and it's a really delightful romp.

I loved this one and couldn't put it down. Alaric comes home after several years to find that he's become a celebrity. He meets Willa at a house party taking place at his home. Though Willa's friend is a huge Lord Wilde fan, Willa has never read one of his books and is quite unimpressed with him, which he finds refreshing. Fun and witty, I enjoyed this story. The ending has me anticipating the next book.

Is it wrong that my favourite character was the mad Puritan villain? Prudence's deranged evangelical speeches were hilarious and brought much needed drama to this Regency romance of a woman falling quickly for a man that she at first claims she would never marry. I'm realizing that certain relationship and gender dynamics do not work for me--in this case alpha men and virginal women. I did like the kind of tongue in cheek melodrama here though!

nice little romance with pretty fun characters, an plot that moves right along and a ridiculous (double!) external threat to overcome at the end. oh, how I love predictable romances! but this was honestly the best Eloisa James I've read in a very long time.

1.5 stars. Boring characters, boring story, boring dialogue, boring sex. A skunk as a pet?? A crazy woman?? Only good thing was the ancillary characters.
