This worked for me—it was a little too much I’m-not-like-other-girls (in both the vapid fangirl and bluestocking directions) in tone at times, but it worked with the insta-lust? Eloisa James is one of those old school writers whose plotting makes up for otherwise bad tropes (I love some religious zealotry). And I really just want to see how the other two books play out—those relationships seem way more interesting.
Quick and fun read, for those who like that sort of thing. And I do.
Enjoyed the characters and dialogue. The infamous hero premise and the resulting conflict were fresh and different. Looking forward to the next book, which was set up nicely here.
I feel a little torn about this book. On one hand, it was very cute and the trope of famous-dude-falls-for-girl-who’s-not-into-it is one that I love. On the other hand, the book is doing so much heavy lifting for the rest of the series that it detracts from the main plotline. The central romance was simple and shallow, as the only conflict was convincing Willa to marry Alaric. Most of the book seemed to be about introducing the side characters and their dynamics. I really liked that this book was set in the 18th century and thus had a very different fashion sense than most historicals.
I am WILD about Wilde in Love. Eloisa James did a fantastic job of creating fun, smart, and strong characters. Lord Wilde, an author/ explorer returns home to more fanfare than a modern day rock star. His image is plastered on the walls of girls and women everywhere. They travel to his estate to steal brick and flowers. There is even a sold out play about him called Wilde In Love.
Willa is a beauty with a brain. She's already turned down 14 suitors and doesn't intent to marry just any man - he must be smart, a good conversationalist and intensely private.
When the two meet the sparks fly! She ties to resist - he is everything she doesn't want. She yearns for privacy and his life is on display for all to see. The more she ignores him the more he wants her.
If the heat bestrewn these two isn't enough, throw in a spurned woman who fancies herself in love with Lord Wilde to the point of being dangerous.
Since this is just book 1 in the series, I see many more Wilde tales in my future.

I wanted to like this...actually I really didn't care if I did or didn't, but OH MY GOD. At first I thought it was just how I was reading it, maybe I just wasn't getting into the story the way I was supposed to. I have an issue with historical...anything, especially when I feel that some names and places might be a little off. (Wilhelmina, really? Alaric, I'll excuse, but no respectable Englishperson would name their kid anything like that...not for another hundred years anyway!) Like, I got it, Willa's not impressed with this adventurer dude, and Alaric digs that she is the only woman in England who wants nothing to do with him, I feel that. So I listened to the audio book.....I literally stopped on the same chapter as last time, my first instinct being correct.
I know this author is popular, well like, but I just don't get it. It's the same stuff I complained about in my Born to be Wilde review; the heroine is "not like other girls" and Alaric is....stale. I get the impression he's supposed to be some rogue, debonair, adventurer type who goes on such batshit crazy exhibitions that when he writes about them, no one believes it. That he's an asshole with a heart of gold. But he's just boring. He barely interacts with Willa, and yet barely into the story, he hasn't had more than a couple of conversations, all stilted, all...forced. I just couldn't get into it. It probably didn't help that I had the weirdest fucking narrator. Honestly, if you need a laugh, get your hands on Wilde in Love, narrated by Susan Duerden, it is....breathtaking.

I liked the hero and heroine a lot, and it's an interesting conflict (he's famous for writing about his traveling adventures, she's private and doesn't want a man with hundreds of admirers), but there was a heavy message of "not like other girls" about why he liked her, and it really turned me off. Other girls giggle, other girls like fashion, other girls care about their looks, but not Willa, who is beautiful and brilliant and perfect without ever trying. I'd rather read a book about someone who's only so-so looking and has to try really hard, to be honest.
This was delightful, and I can't wait for the other couples' stories. I am not going to enjoy being patient.
