I've come to the conclusion that the Haunting that occurs is Eleanor. it makes sense because no one else was nearly as affected as her. Maybe her mental state and essential homelessness had something to do with it. Why didn't everyone else go crazy? They would have in any other story. It almost feels like Hill House targeted Eleanor and that was fun to watch. I would love to see a modern retelling of this. The dialogue and more vibes than plot aspects bored me a bit. I'm wondering if A Haunting on the Hill by Elizabeth Hand might be exactly what I'm looking for. Now i have to go read that but first a rewatch of the fabulous adaptation of this book.

i was so unbelievably bored. hardly any scary things happened, all the characters except doctor and luke were annoying. i read it because i liked the netflix show and thought it would be similar but this wasn’t as entertaining. mediocre at best. 1.5 stars.

everything i hated about this book turned out to be kind of the point. It was definitely a psychological book I found myself questioning the motives and everything the characters said every five seconds. The descriptions of the happenings of the house were so increadible and really had that effect, however I would've liked more. I guess I walked in wanting a horror to only find a terror so can't really complain.

There is something so special about the way Jackson writes. The way the house is personified and Eleanor’s spiral is delicately unwound is delicious.
