Pretty gripping

I really enjoyed this book; my second haunted house read this year after Naomi’s Room. Shirley Jackson’s writing surprised me; it wasn’t nearly as predictable as I expected. Without ever directly stating that Eleanor was possessed, Jackson made it clear through her thoughts and feelings, which at times felt very relatable.

It was an engaging and atmospheric read for October.. gripping, unsettling, and immersive. I found myself invested in the story, with some characters being genuinely likable while others were delightfully irritating. 
A classic gothic tale that lingers after you close the book.
