Magical? Maybe, I guess. Keep in mind this is set right after the Great Depression and race plays a part in the story...  A carnival run by a child-eating Demon. A young black woman who can communicate with animals, and who of course is the only one who can save them all. So many questionable characters, and events... It was a bit too much, I was confused many times. The ending was so lackluster, for the buildup. Overall, I'm left feeling very disappointed.

This book had an interesting premise but I think it could have been executed a bit better. It was pretty slow paced and repetitive at times. But I really liked the cast of characters and the tension/mystery leading up to the climax. Though I will also admit I found the ending (especially the epilogue) to be a bit disappointing; it sort of erased some of the meaning of some of the earlier events such as
the gut-wrenching moment that the main character learns that both of her parents are dead and she's the last one left to take care of the little sister she's been searching for, only to find out in the epilogue that oops, the parents were alive the whole time, no worries! or having two romantic relationships for neither of them to matter.
But it was overall an entertaining read.

This book is so doggone good! I'm so upset that this book isn't getting more recognition! I love in love with almost every character in this book except the villan. And the villan was everything I wanted in a villan! I did not expect to fall in love with this book the way I did, but Bacchanal is one of those books that reminds you why you fell in love with reading. While reading Bacchanal everything in my world seemed to fall away, and I was transformed to this creepy carnival where karma caught up with several characters. I could smell the carnival food, I could hear the carnival music, my heart raced during the creepy parts and I could not read fats enough to find out what happens next! If you have not read Bacchanal, you are most definitely missing out! Get it and read it today!

A good read overall, great if you like magic or carnival settings.  One big grip: did we really need the Liza/Ishe romance? That was odd, and kind of creepy.  The pacing was also a little janky, with it being slow at the beginning and fast at the end.  The ending was also unsatisfying, and left questions unanswered.  Still a good book, and I would recommend to people who like low-fantasy or historical fiction set in the Great Depression.
