lol wut
That was the most abrupt ending ever.
Are you telling me this is the end of the story for all of these characters...? Since the next book focuses on a diff set of characters in the same timeframe, and there is no book after that.... WHICH MEANS I WILL NEVER FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO BRIENNE lol wut. Her story ended on the most annoying cliffhanger ever...!!!! WHAT WORD DID SHE SAY? DID SHE DIE?!
Wow. I'm just.... so disappointed....and now I feel for all those people who are waiting for the author to write the next book because JESUS THIS IS A SUPER UNFAIR WAY TO END A STORY

*sigh*
anyway.
Lots of deviations from the show now, so I'm happy about that. And I'm even more excited to read the new books because.... who knows where they'll go.
also OBVIOUSLY THE 'little brother' WHO IS GOING TO KILL CERCEI IS JAIME omg. That'll be a way more interesting conclusion than how their story ended in the show.... ugh.

Surprisingly, even though this story only followed half the characters (and those characters included Sam... and the Dornish people....and Cersei....and Sansa....and the Greyjoys...), it was still a super fun book.

And the most disturbing part was the Blue Bard's torture scene. I was seriously haunted by that for days. Gah, so good.

*lol also.
GRMM left a note at the end of this book saying not to worry, that he'll publish the book about all the other characters in the next year or so. He wrote that note in 2005 and was confident enough in that claim to publish it in the final version of the book.
A Dance with Dragons didn't come out until 2011.

LOL yeah.
I have no hope of ever finding out what happens to these characters T__T

I know this isn't the most loved book by fans. I get it. I'm sure I also would have been even more disappointed if I had been reading this back in 2005, five years after A Storm of Swords. At points I, too, felt incredibly frustrated by the book. I felt tired after reading Cersei's POV chapters after a while. How many more crazed decisions would she make, I asked myself? How many times must Maggy the Frog's name be brought up? I do not need to read about how Jaime "danced" his dance or whatever at the end of every Jaime chapter. Learn some new phrases GRRM. It got to be more frustrating than, "You know nothing, Jon Snow."
I missed the fantastical elements of the book, as well. With Jon, Bran and Daenerys not in this book we missed out on Others, wargs and dragons.
SpoilerOn the other hand we got a taste of Braavos and the Faceless Men - definitely a fascinating and strange culture to learn about. We got to see more of the repercussions of the Red Wedding, with Lady Stoneheart prosecuting all Freys, Boltons and Lannisters. We got to see how deep the Dorne plot goes. GRRM was certainly long-winded in his descriptions of Dorne's landscape, and setting up that storyline, and I don't know if I wanted to read that much about Arianne's captivity, but it certainly led to some very interesting developments. Prince Doran might seem gentle, but he is just as deadly as Oberyn. With the Dorne storyline, plus Aemon learning about the dragons, this book gave me the confidence that finally Daenerys would come to play a more important role in the Westeros side of the story. After all, the series is called "A Song of Ice and Fire", so Fire and Ice must meet at some point. Samwell's journey to Oldtown allows us to see the Citadel, and has set up more questions of who else is playing in the game of thrones. Also, any book that gives me more history of Westeros and Essos will always make me happy.

Overall, this book is a lot like A Game of Thrones, where we see more of the talking aspects of politics, and everything is more of set up for later story lines. This book continues to succeed in developing characters further, and though I am not fond of Cersei Lannister, I understand her better, and find her a more compelling villain. Some characters could have received more storyline (Sansa's did not serve much plot, in my opinion, and every seizure than Robert endured need not be described in the book) and I do wonder how everything is supposed to be wrapped up by book seven (maybe it'll be eight?), but I will continue to hope for the best. The book definitely need some editing, but I am satisfied with a few of the stories told (though Sam's could have been less voyage description and more Aemon talks). The overall plot of Westeros did move forward, and I'm more excited to read part two, ADWD, to get the complete story of this world. I do think GRRM needs to start to focus more on the Others aspect of the storyline, but the game of thrones storyline must be wrapped up too, so I can appreciate and enjoy this novel at the end of the day.

Wow!  Martin’s books just get better and better; the main plot is so complex with all the different character’s and each of their storylines and how it all intertwines with the plot.  I have so many questions after finishing!  (Isn’t that how it always is when I finish one of these books though?)  Firstly, Brienne!  Are you alive or did you actually get hung?! While, Cersei is not my favorite character, it was interesting to see her thought processes to better understand how her decisions and how character ticks… I think I would classify her as a paranoid alcoholic.  She definitely got what was coming to her at the end of this book when she was imprisoned; it was quite comical to see her scheming work ultimately against her, she has such hatred in her heart.  The only Lannisters I like are Jamie and Tyrion; I am so proud of Jamie for ignoring his sister’s letter as well - it is really nice to see he’s becoming less blind when it comes to how she really is with all her ambitions and inherit evil.  I don’t know who I side with most; I find I enjoy characters more than families but the Starks will always have a place in my heart because they did start this story off from the very beginning in the first book.  It’s ironic really that both Stark sisters have to pretend to be something they are not just to survive.  And poor Jon; he seems so cold as Lord Commander up on the wall.  I wonder what thoughts are going through his head right now with being still a young boy but also having to be the leader for an entire group of people who all depend upon him (while also playing the “game” with King Stannis at the wall…).  Two other characters whom I love dearly and I can’t wait to know more about: Sandor and Gendry.  I KNOW Sandor is still alive and is the gravedigger… it’s plainly obvious to me when I was reading that part.  As for the beloved bastard son of King Robert… I hope he continues to survive and keep doing good things by watching the orphans at “Orphan Inn.”  Stay golden!  I hope you and Arya shall meet again soon in the future.  I absolutely ship them (and Sandor/Sansa and Jamie/Brienne…) and it would break my shipper heart if they never got to meet again.

Rated: 4.75/5.0—Overall, I loved it.  There were lots of new characters and expanding on previously secondary characters which makes for a very busy plot line and very difficult to keep everything straight!  I did enjoy getting to get inside of the head of some characters upon why they do the things they do based upon their thought processes.  Everything seems to be getting to a head with all these characters vying for their champion for the Iron Throne; a lot of characters are now setting their sights on Dany and her dragons.  I am excited to learn more about her and all the other character’s who didn’t get a chance to be featured in this book.  I am also very eager to know what happens to all the characters who were in this book; all of their stories seemed to have ended in cliffhangers!
