Infuriating. Way too much plotting in the first 3/4, so much that I started skimming large portions. I understand the choice of Gal for narrator of this book, but it was difficult to follow the twists and turns of his logic and loyalties. Once again, though, I’m going to do the masochistic thing and check out the next (and final) book. The last 50-ish pages were engaging enough to make me remember the high points of BONDS OF BRASS. So. Once more into the fray. I will probably regret it.

Okay????!???

I don’t know, man. I don’t even know AT ALL.

It must be stated that this book is not even 20% as romantic as Bonds of Brass. That book was some straight-outta-fanfic ROMANCE. I think I even mentioned in my review of BoB that the sci-fi world-building was kind of just window dressing.

Well, not so in Oaths of Legacy! Oof, this book is plot, plot, plot - and the space empire storyline goes from window dressing to like… the whole point…

Did I like it? Yeah, I GUESS but lord… it was not what I expected my dudes. This was like… basically a bunch of world-building re: the competing philosophies of space empire.

I am extremely ready for the next book but like. Wow. Idk. I am conflicted about the plot. I am not even at all conflicted about finding out what’s gonna happen to Gal and Ettian though so catch me back here when book 3 comes out!

Most of the story is slow going and it became repetitive to hear Gal whining, but the ending sets up an interesting plot and makes me interested in the next book

This is the second book in the Bloodright Trilogy. I rushed through it at top speed. I am riveted by the friends-and-enemies duo of Ettian and Gal. I appreciated the switch from Ettian's perspective in book one to Gal's in book two, even though Ettian is my favorite of the pair. And I enjoyed this very much, if not quite as much as book one. This is because of two things -- major spoiler warning --
Spoilerfirstly, Gal starts the book hating Ettian (or believing he hates Ettian), and I was impatient for him to come to his senses and realize Ettian is The Best. Secondly, Ettian and Gal spend too much of the book not in each other's company.

No time to write more. Must read book three....

Four out of five princeling stars.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

How is it that this series just keeps getting better with every book?

BONDS OF BRASS was a fantastic novel in its own right, with tons of action-packed dogfights in space and underdogs accomplishing incredible things and a tense, harrowing will-they-won't-they relationship built on secrets at the center of it all.

But OATHS OF LEGACY ups the ante. A relationship that seemed fairly straightforward and heartwarming takes a drastic, politically charged spin; Gal and Ettian's interactions in this book are nauseatingly stressful and frustrating in all the best ways.

Before, when Gal and Ettian went up against the rest of the known universe, it was as a pair, fighting from within the cockpit of a small craft with nothing but the clothes on their backs and each other to keep them from falling apart. Now, in OATHS OF LEGACY, Gal has to struggle with the realities of what it means to be a galactic emperor - from the perspective of someone else that's several steps ahead of him. He has to come to terms with the fact he was betrayed, but betrayed out of a selfishness on Ettian's behalf to keep him alive. He has to learn what he really wants for himself, whether that's galactic domination at the cost of Ettian's empire's defeat, or if he wants something else. Does he want something else? And he has to do it alone.

Gal's character arc in OATHS OF LEGACY is a master class in internal conflict. He really cemented himself as my favorite character in this series, and that's saying something, considering how much I love Ettian to death. Wen, the street rat they save at the end of the first book, really grew on me as well, as she began to take on more of an active role in the story and in Gal and Ettian's lives.

OATHS OF LEGACY is a beautiful story about a beautiful mess. It takes all the best bits of the first installment in the trilogy and dials the tension up to eleven. I am already clinging to the edge of my seat waiting for the third book, and if it's even a tenth as fantastic as OATHS OF LEGACY was, this trilogy will cement itself as something truly incredible.

(Many thanks to the ruttin' fantastic folks over at Del Rey and PRH for the NetGalley ARC!)
