Lent to me by a friend, I quickly devoured this true story of a woman who escaped a cult based in the South Island of New Zealand. It reminded me of "Unfollow", but this was easier to read and lighter on the introspective musings. While Lilia had more support from her family when leaving the cult compared to Megan Phelps-Roper, it still took a lot of courage to leave the only home she had ever known and start again in a world where everything felt sinful. I think she has successfully portrayed the positive and negative of Gloriavale and should be commended for her openness in sharing her story.

An honest, balanced autobiography. Interesting to read alongside the recent doco about this cult. This book is about learning, being able to make your own choices, overcoming fallible teaching, and understanding the hold people can exert over others.

I LOVED this book. I felt that it was so well written. Lilia was honest about her upbringing in a more prominent family within the church and acknowledged that she did not have it as bad as others; however, she didn't come across as a pure victim either. Her outlook on religion and healing and understanding of all was so positive, and I appreciated it so much. I was SO excited when I read her comparison of religion to language using the English and Spanish word for tree, I have been saying this for years, and it moved me that others see it too. I am so happy you are finding peace Lilia, this book was wonderful.
