To preface this (brief) review, I am pro-Palestinian and I believe Palestinian voices should be heard and published! This particular book didn't work for me. I felt very detached from the experience of reading it; the impactful descriptions of life under occupation were overshadowed by the repetitive nature of the writing and how little investment I felt emotionally. At the same time, it is an immense privilege to feel uninvested as my home country provides the bombs that continuously strike Gaza and the people who are trapped there. Thank you to LibroFm for providing this audiobook for free, and I look forward to engaging with more Palestinian writers whose work I can wholeheartedly support.

Not a single detail in this book is minor.
Even if the narrator in the second half of the book says it is. Details like being used to bombings and shelling and opening a window to avoid it shattering in an explosion but being upset about the dust. Not minor.

Minor Detail was such a rollercoaster of emotions. The intertwined plots are deliberate, the writing is expertly done, and the symbolism is unmatched. Adania Shibli did a fantastic job sharing the complex depth of tragedy while not sensationalizing or romanticizing it.

There is so much tucked within 144 pages that one read is not enough to fully unfold the intricacies. I'm convinced that you get from this book what you give to it. So much remains open for interpretation that any conclusion the reader arrives at is more a commentary on us rather than the book.

Minor Detail is a heart-wrenching must-read.
