Brilliant book. Sebald's exploration of themes of memory and disintegration are helpful and compelling. His addition of images is fascinating and alluring. I would recommend this book to the right person.
That said, it is certainly not for everyone - the structure is odd and sometimes offputting (though important for Sebald's project). Anyone who wants a standard plot structure (or even a climax or a narrator with a name) should look elsewhere for their next read.

A man struggling with his identity and childhood trauma over a span of 30 years (or simultaneously, if time works as Austerlitz hypothesizes). The result is a rambling and reflective piece of literature that I loved, and would recommend to some, but not to most.

Perhaps I'm too obtuse but just could not get into this one. The prose is simple enough but the endless descriptions of plot less things just couldn't hold me. Maybe to be revisited in a decade.

This book is my nemesis. Only finished out of pure spite.

I recommend this book all the time. Reading this book was like breathing in fresh air. The most creative and intriguing work of fiction I have delved into in a very long time.

It's Sebald it's unique (while being very much echoic of Saturn) it's on a different level & the kind of literary event we don't encounter so much in the past couple decades. I sense there's probably debate between this and Saturn which I'm mostly not interested in they've enough personality each that I'm satisfied! Love u max wish you weren't dead

I am more glad to have this book behind me than any I have ever read. I wish I could at least say I was proud that I finished it, but this was just painful to read. I don't know if it's because it was translated from another language, but the prose is awful. I've read that a lot of people find it beautiful, but I found it boring and excessive and pointless. There are no real characters in this book. There is no real plot. It's just one long, cruddy story from some self-absorbed idiot. I am astonished at the praise this book has received - I will never read it again. It is really not worth the time.
