what a FUN book. this is a proper story in the best way and was just a blast to read

Atkinson never disappoints, whether she's aiming for a modern classic like[b:Life After Life|15790842|Life After Life (Todd Family, #1)|Kate Atkinson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1358173808l/15790842._SY75_.jpg|21443207], or a lighter comedy of manners/thriller like this one. She's brilliant when it comes to multiple points of view, and makes the reader feel empathy for even her seediest characters. Her plots keep you guessing mainly because her characters are so complex, you can't predict their choices -- but once made, they make perfect sense.

Very enjoyable with great pacing. I was a little nervous about reading this bc I had nightmares after reading one of the author’s previous books, but while it was dark and explored the corrupt underbelly of 1920s London, there were moments of levity.
Probably 3.5 stars. I ended up really enjoying this, but it took way longer than normal to get into it. Also, the end was bizarre. Atkinson is one of my favorite authors, and it felt much more choppy than her normal stuff.
