This was such a fun little read. My grandma told me about this series when I saw her at Thanksgiving a few months ago, and she told me she missed her old copies that got lost. For Christmas, I got her an edition of this book from 1971, and she got me the newest edition from 2018. Can't wait to call her and tell her how much I enjoyed James Herriot's stories; he's got a great sense of humor, and I loved learning about his practice. I hope to pick up the rest of the series one day, too.

Some quotes I liked:

"It was easy to be a prophet of doom when the young men emerging from the colleges after a hard five years' slog were faced by a world indifferent to their enthusiasm and bursting knowledge," (p. 8).

"The sight of that man dancing frantically on his patient's ribs taught me a great truth--that I was going to look just as big a fool at fairly regular intervals throughout my career," (p. 37).

"It was as though he recognized something there--something of the strength and authority of t'owd doctor--and reached out eagerly toward the lost days," (p. 46).

"Yet what made him trail down that hillside every day in all weathers? Why had he filled the last two years of those two old horses with peace and beauty? Why had he given them a final ease and comfort which he had withheld from himself?
It could only be love," (p. 285).

What a lovely book! Reading this book was like putting the kettle on and settling in your favorite chair to watch Masterpiece Classics or taking a stroll in the countryside on a breezy summer's day. The pastoral atmosphere all but leaps off the page. The descriptions, situations, and memories that Herriot shares span the full range of human emotion from comical to infuriating to heartbreaking to spilling over with joy. This is a book that captures one's attention and invigorates the imagination, and I challenge anyone who reads it to feel as though they hadn’t just accompanied Mr. Herriot on his house calls by the end.

A reader does not need to know anything about veterinary medicine to enjoy this book. Really, the humor and good nature with which Herriot tells his anecdotes is both informative and thoroughly entertaining. Darrowby is a place filled with memorable and endearing faces and characters, all creating a variety of challenges for Herriot as he comes into his own as a veterinarian. I could go on, but I really just recommend that you read this book if you want to be taken on a journey of life that will leave you smiling and wishing you too lived in Darrowby in the 1930's where existence seemed so much simpler and new joys could be found each and every day.

As much as I love Herriot’s writing and the beautiful way he describes Yorkshire, there was far too much graphic animal death.
