Nice but sloggy and looked too long to go through, also cow vajayjays.

I was told this was a cozy, enjoyable book to return to. The opening describing in graphic detail all the ways a breech calf birth could go was definitely not it. Then the head vet being either very forgetful, manipulative, or stupid, was not something I found, as I’m sure the author suspected it to be, charming. 17% through and it hasn’t got better. Sorry, but it’s a big pass for me.

A beautiful, pastoral book, filled with memories of the people and animals in the Yorkshire Dales. Herriot’s work drips with earnestness, sincerity, and humanity. A wonderful memoir of mid-century veterinary surgery in England.

I had always been curious about this book, because there was such a great fuss over it that persisted well into my life (it was written shortly before I was born). Well, the fuss is all true - this is one of the best books I have ever read - an autobiography, technically, about a simple man who loves his job. Not only is he a good author, but he is perhaps the best observer of people I have ever seen - he can make 20 english farmers all seem different. I laughed frequently - his descriptive skills were amazing - and cried more than once. Truly a book that will still be around 100 years from now.

One of those books where I have to stop myself from rerouting my whole life to switch to the author’s industry. No, it is NOT wise to drop everything to become a vet, I must remind myself. As COOL as he makes it sound, this is not smart. …. or IS IT-
