“The lies I tell serve a purpose, tipping karma in the right direction. Returning power to those who have lost it. The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who’s telling the story.”

Overall a very interesting look on morality and justice. It changes perspectives and jumps throughout the timeline - but does so in a way that's easy to follow.

My biggest gripe with the book is that it gives "all men are trash" vibes. The female characters are deep and complicated, while the males are very flat and one sided. The arguably one "good" male character is barely in the book and plays such an insignificant role.

That being said, it isn't too hard to overlook it a bit because the girls are the main focus. It is a page turner that keeps you on edge.

The last few books I read took me a while (whether I enjoyed them or not), so with The Lies I Tell I picked out the type of story that usually hooks me easily: a thriller with strong, smart and solidary women. And it worked; I definitely got what I wanted out of this book. I especially loved getting to know Meg and watching her friendship form with Kat - even though for the most part I didn't care that much for Kat herself, who seemed to have a hard time not to obsess about the wrong things. A lot goes on in this story and at times it's a bit much, but there was lots to love so I didn't really mind.

I could not put this down, it was entrancing to read.

The author flawlessly switched between POVs and timelines, I was never confused. All the puzzle pieces fit perfectly by the end.

The characters were written with such nuance and depth, so when you finish you don’t even know who you’re rooting for.

This was a quick and engrossing read. I really enjoyed Meg's character and the vigilante justice she carried out. The pacing was good, there were strong characters/relationships, and a nice touch of social commentary.

Overall, it was a great thriller and I would recommend it!

tw: sexual assault, adult/minor relationship, and gambling addiction

CW: death, sexual assault/date rape, adult/minor relationship, catfishing, gaslighting, casual ableism, gambling addiction, abuse of power (school staff & law enforcement)

I really enjoyed this one, though i did initially have some trouble keeping up in the earlier parts. despite the clearly marked beginnings of chapters, i still found myself occasionally confused with the regular flashbacks. that could very well just be a me issue, of course, but i did want to mention it. it's a dual pov novel that goes back and forth in time with both characters, all in first person.

i am here for a con artist revenge story, and i like the way the book ended with each character quite. possibly a bit too much info-dumping right at the end which some people may not care for, but this was still highly enjoyable and found me cheering for both kat & meg.
