"The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who's telling the story."
Julie Clark... *starts slow clapping*. I haven’t been this freaking amped about a book in a while. This was just an absolute 5 star read.
The Lies I Tell is a compelling, intriguing, complex, and unputdownable. The two main characters are multi-faceted, especially Meg, who is a female
Kat played such an important supporting role and showed that sometimes actions have affects that are widespread and that you may have never expected. I loved her complex relationship with Meg and the strange but true friendship that they formed.
I loved Clark's last novel, The Last Flight, and I loved The Lies I Tell even more. She has become an auto-buy author for me! AND THE CAMEO from TLF in the scene in the airport. It's a blink and you'll miss it type of thing but man, when you see it! "Two women working together are a force to be reckoned with."
Read this if you like:
- Multiple POVs
- Fast-paced novels
- Suspense Thrillers
- Minimal twists (but still a GREAT story)
- Con-artist storylines
- Female empowerment
- Women helping women
- Men getting their comeuppance
- Female badassery
Thank you to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Landmark, and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book before it's publication date! This is no way affected my review and all opinions are my own.

I liked the con artist narrative and true crime feel of this story. The end/epilogue really sealed it for me.

Julie Clark is back with a great cat and mouse story that will keep you guessing who the real con artist is until the end. I loved the writing, it was so well developed. The story follows Meg, a seasoned con artist, self proclaimed grifter, whose ultimate goal is to get revenge on the man who ruined her mother's life. She spends ten plus years crafting different story lines, using different names, and spins a web of lies. Then there is Kat, who is harboring a secret of her own. She's a writer, and getting the exclusive story about Meg and everything she has done would be the writing that would make her career. The friendship and comradery that developed between Kat and Meg was fun to read about. Despite Kat's best efforts to not let herself get sucked into Meg's world she ended up feeling empathy towards Meg. By the last 20% or so of the book I could not put it down. I had to keep reading to figure out what was going to happen. The ending was fun and fast paced. I can’t say I was completely shocked but I love the way it was written. Definitely add this to your summer TBR or if you haven’t picked your June BOTM you won’t be disappointed!

Genre: Mystery
Format: 📖

Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆
The Lies I Tell makes for the perfect summer read! It’s full of mystery, intrigue, and one woman determined to destroy several lives. But, don’t worry, these lives aren’t those of upstanding citizens - they’re from those who have lied and manipulated their way to their fortune.
It was entertaining to read as Meg laid out her plan and tried to avoid being discovered. She was a force to be reckoned with, and I cheered her on throughout the entire book. I would have loved to have more chapters detailing her thought-out plans of destruction.
I did enjoy the other perspective from Kat Roberts as she tried to figure out Meg’s game. Unfortunately, Kat is out to get Meg as she blames her for what happened all those years ago. Throughout the book, Kat showed the most character growth. At first, I was a little frustrated by her nativity towards life and her fiancé, but her character grew on me as more was revealed about Kat’s past.
🤓 Bad guys getting what they deserve
🔎 Perfect for the true-crime lover
✌🏼 Dual narrative
💯 Loved the ending
❌ - Sexual assault, rape (not descriptive), gaslighting, addiction
I recommend reading The Lies I Tell if you enjoyed reading You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen.

I’m bad about guessing the ending quickly, especially with mysteries, but when an experienced con man (or in this case, con woman) is at the center, it’s hard to know what’s real. Clark deftly structures a manipulating story that ensnares you while including nuggets of empathy to allow the reader to really decide the true nature of Meg and Kat. There isn’t necessarily a huge “twist” but I was definitely questioning what was true!
I love the way Clark crafts a story without throwing too much at the reader. Her characters are neither wholly good or wholly bad, but similar to someone I can imagine meeting in real life. In fact, this book made me question how many con people I might have met in my life.
If a fast-paced, twisty plot featuring morally gray characters is your thing, I suggest you check out The Lies I Tell when it’s released in June! Thank you @NetGalley for the ARC!
