THIS IS SO WELL DONE.
It's a beautiful story that's ultimately about self-love, but also finding love romantically and within a family our main character never thought she'd have a connection with. Hannah's estranged father passes away, but she is invited to his funeral in Nigeria because all he wanted was for all his children to eventually meet and take care of each other. This family works together to welcome Hannah, and some members are more accepting than others. Nevertheless, they are all grieving the death of their father in different ways, and Hannah's time in Nigeria teaches her several things about herself and the meanings of various forms of love. The familial drama is so well-written, there's a forbidden romance, there's a budding romance, there are secrets, and there's a lot of self-discovery. I absolutely adored this story, and I will read anything Jane Igharo writes.

Okay, this one is a weird one because I read it for the romance and ended up liking everything EXCEPT for the romance. Which was sadly a little rushed and cringy. But the rest of it, the family, grief, self acceptance etc, that was wonderful. I was invested in the plot and the characters, except that I did not feel the chemistry of the romance at all.

A fun, fluffy read. The characters had great chemistry. A lot of the conflicts felt forced or overwrought.

This started out fine, but got really slow about halfway through.
The premise is interesting! But I think it needed some more fleshing out. Like, there are some complex family relationships and issues (illegitimate daughter who never knew her dad comes to his funeral and none of them knew he had an affair and a secret child) and it just kinda got skated. Like some of them were mean to her and then they just decided not to be.
And there was talk of being angry at their father but that was not explored.
At the beginning of the book we jumped around from character to character POV almost to just explain their motivations but then we never get those POVs again - so what was the point???
The romance was…idk…like….it just happened so fast and there’s no tension. Lawrence has no flaws. Honestly, Hannah barely has any either so I wasn’t super invested in them.
And then the third act breakup! With everyone! Where did that come from??? There’s no set up that Hannah has had these doubts throughout the story. I forgot that it was said they had to be nice to her to get the inheritance too so I was just like…”well okay”.
If there’d just been a little more time put into the different characters and their relationships and some better storyline plotting this could’ve been a great one!
