Fascinating, although I found the author jumped around a lot. Also, it's impossible to keep track of all of the 'characters' as they have prolific offspring, are all intermarried, and have bizarre unfathomable names. Once I gave up on those issues I was enthralled with the story and history of the religion. It's amazing to think about such a modern creation of a whole new religion.

Rereading this after watching the reality show "Sister Wives" - compelling and utterly terrifying.

Fundamentalism, no matter of what religious stripes, is always scary.

Interesting, but it did take me awhile to get through it.

I’ve been fixated on learning about the LDS faith for the last few years, in conjunction with deconstructing my own faith and exploring the “cultiness” of many of our practices in life (some good some bad). I think this would’ve been a great intro on the topic when it came out but a few facts stood out as incorrect and of course it’s a bit dated at this point. But still possibly a good primer on some of the main beats of Mormonism if you are new to the topic. I previously watched the TV show and was surprised the detective was not part of the book! I went into this expecting that perspective but could have of course Googled that beforehand.
