We have records on the beginnings of Mormonism, and can learn disturbing lessons about how religions form. Classic cult tactics. Emotional manipulation, obsession with sex, emphasis on blind obedience to leaders and voices in your head, misogyny, racism. Don't just knock the LDS church: this should make us think about religion in general.

Really well written. A very compelling non-fiction read that's also well researched and educational.

Under The Banner of Heaven is my favorite non-fiction book of all time.   Re-reading only reaffirms this.

Krakauer’s juxtaposing of early Mormon history and Mormon current events is skillful, powerful, and wildly engaging. He cuts a clear path through history, deftly uncovering what makes Mormon faith, and all faith, a potential source of danger. This book tells the stories of real people that share  roots with the Laffertys — the stories of Elizabeth Smart, Flora Jessop, Mark Hoffman, and others.

Under The Banner of Heaven is an incredibly well-researched, empathically-written and earnest exploration of faith and religious fundamentalism. I can’t recommend it enough.

“Faith is the very antithesis of reason…common sense is no match for the voice of God.”

It has taken me almost a year to finish this book. While it was engaging it was also depressing which is why I put it down 100 pgs in. When I picked it back up I found that the author included a ton on historical facts and instances of the church being so crooked, I understood why it was just honestly boring. It is very well researched and I do enjoy Krakauer’s writing, especially his subtle jabs about organized religion. I like the fact that he talks about his own beliefs in the author’s note.

Must read if you enjoy shoddy reporting and incest porn.

I am so disgusted by the level of reporting that went into this book. I recently read Elizabeth Smarts autobiography in which she in depth details her experience being kidnapped. Krakauer took her experience of abuse and torture and rape and boiled it all down to “well, she was raised by religious zealots, so what do you expect?”

It’s disturbing how little care he has for the people he steps on and belittles as he looks for the most salacious story. He has equated an entire religion with pedophiles and murderers. Did he consult the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at all? Or did he just look for the most disturbing headlines and paint a picture from there?

I wanted to have an open mind about this book, but it truly is everything that is wrong with our culture. It’s disgusting.

this story is fascinating to an ex mormon, but reads like a textbook so I only made it halfway thru. the true crime tv series w andrew garfield is chilling & insanely good, so maybe just go watch that?
