I was driven to read this after the first Sherlock Holmes novel whose plot involves Mormons.

A classic weave-the-past-and-present-together structure, and both parts are equally engrossing.

Fascinating, but not as good as Salvation on Sand Mountain, which I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who enjoyed this book.

DNF. Got about half way but honestly couldn’t listen anymore.

A true-crime story juxtaposed with the genesis tale of mormonism. We trace the motivations for a bizarre, religiously-motivated double murder through the weaving genealogies of several fundamentalist mormon sects, all the way back to joseph smith. The goal is to use the case study to shed light on some "big questions". Is this murder a reflection of a "violent faith"? Does this say anything about faith in general?

Ultimately, I'm not convinced that these specific crimes say much of anything general about the "religious impulse". The "big questions", although thought-provoking, always seemed a bit of an afterthought. It also doesn't really matter. The details drive the book. I enjoyed almost every second of both the true-crime and historical narratives.

Fascinating book on the history and beliefs of fundamentalist Mormonism as well as the mainstream LDS church. I had no idea how many similarities there were to fundamentalist Christianity, which I grew up in. This book is well-researched, compelling, and eye-opening. My family can now stop pressuring me to finish while they wait to watch the TV series.

I found this book fascinating and couldn't put it down. While Krakauer's focus is on Fundamentalist Mormons, it did have a lot about Mormon history in general. Reading this book will make you rethink a lot about religion in general and about the line between faith and insanity.
