A fascinating look at the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, exploration of Mormon Fundamentalism, and disturbing case study of a murder inspired by religious extremism all rolled into one book. It's a page-turner all the way through but there's a relatively brief section towards the end dealing the retrial of one of the murderers with expert testimony to determine whether he is/was insane that was so fascinating - this book can make you remember fondly the gentle hypocrisies of small town organized religion in America when it's contrasted to extremism & fundamentalism.
Likely a 3.5 and I certainly learned a lot of history even after spending some time in the Arizona trip. I hated the organization of this book and the bouncing around, and ultimately I couldn’t let go of the Park ranger’s critical review (for better I think).
I think all Krakauer has been ruined for me since Missoula.

I read 100% of this out loud to my husband in the car during our road trips this summer. We both found it frightening, yet fascinating. It helped to have somebody to process it with along the way.
It’s an astonishing read for someone who’s not religious, it takes a deep dive into a very violent faith and it really lives up to its title. I am at a loss for words, the only thing I can say is go read this book, educate yourself, it’s worthwhile.
If you are at all interested in Mormon Fundamentalism this is a great book to learn about the history of Mormonism and how different fundamentalist groups have sprouted off. I highly recommend this book.
