This just isn't grabbing me! People who are more hardcore mystery readers will probably like it.

This was a quick read and, for the most part, I enjoyed it. It wasn't particularly shocking at the end, and there were a lot of plot lines that I wasn't super excited to follow but the writing was good (particularly the food writing) and in general the setting/characters/plot felt a bit more interesting than your run of the mill mystery book.

I received this book through a First Reads giveaway.

DNF at a couple pages into chapter 5. As a principle, I do not rate books I have not completed, as that could be unfair.

Mystery, LGBT+, food writing...this book has so many things I love, so I expected to be enthralled! But I found the first few chapters scattered with mild cliches that stacked on top of each other enough to become bland and some borderline irritating, and meanwhile the protagonist is a young person who is "we live in a society"-ing the people around her for their addiction to technology or use of slang. What? I think mysteries are great vehicles for social commentary, but this kind is exactly as shallow as it perceives the teenagers it wants to make fun of.

In all, the skill of the author's writing is good and the story is not bad from what I read. I'm not dropping it because it sucks, but because I can tell it wouldn't be something I'd personally enjoy.
