Would have been a 4 star for me but I hated alfred and don’t think his part was even necessary.
Did you know the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff is the greatest maritime disaster in history with over 9,000 deaths? Yet, we only hear of the Lusitania and Titanic.
If you like survival stories, historical fiction, or WWII narratives, Salt to the Sea will intrigue and capture your heart. Although YA, this title will flood your soul. Few authors truly capture the stark effects of war on youth–especially children who have no one to help them through it.

This book is freaking amazing. I love Ms. Sepetys style of writing and how she draws you in from the very first chapter, I love how this book tied in with Between Shades of Grey, I loved all the all the characters. I literally laughed and cried reading this book and it's so heart wrenching because this actually happened, even if the characters were fictional. Such a great, great book. I would recommend it. Easily 5 out of 5 stars.
A YA book about people within Germany trying to get to safety at the end of WWII. It highlights well that all of humanity was suffering in that time and the terrible cost of war. Likeable characters (Joanna the nurse, Florian the renegade, the shoe poet and the little boy) working together to try to flee the invading Russians
When the story finally came together, I was glad to learn about an important historical event and see what happened with the characters, but up until the last 10% I didn't like it very much. The four characters alternate narration with very short chapters, and Sepetys has them stretch out their histories and end every narration with a dramatic close. This makes every other page a dramatic comment and narration switch, and it didn't work for me.
I really enjoyed this book. I grew to become fond of all the characters (except one) I was completely invested into this story. I cannot believe I did not know about this disaster but I am truly thankful Ruta Sepetys taught me this important information.
Both Between Shades of Gray and Salt to the Sea had very captivating story lines and I can’t believe it took me until the end of the book to realize the Lina from Between Shades of Gray is Joana’s cousin. I also love how she taught me about an event of WWII that is not well known.
However, her ending style is not for me. I know we get some closure from the last chapter in both books that takes place decades later but I felt both this book and Between Shades of Gray just ended. Like an “are there some pages missing??” kind of ending. I would have liked a little more development, personally.
