Despite this story being about the terrible affects of war on innocent people and their city I loved this book. I was so invested in our protagonist’s story and that of her neighbours, I couldn’t put it down.
Priscilla Morris is a fantastic storyteller, can’t wait to read whatever sh writes next.

Vivid in colour and in story, this book doesn't shy away from the horror of war and living under seige.  Spanning across a year from the beginning of the seige in Sarajevo during the early 1990s, the book follows Zora (and her neighbours) and her choice to stay in her beloved city whilst her family lives/move to England. The language was very immersive, I loved the use of colour throughout as Zora is an artist. Paintings and imagery of bridges centered the novel away from the catastrophy of war. I felt this book tried to explore alot in 270-ish pages, and I didn't feel as connected with the characters as I had hoped.
especiallly with the love storyline, i felt it was very abrupt towards the end and maybe a device from the author for Zora to yurn for Sarajevo after leaving, as she has nothing else to draw her back
I did overall like the book and I discovered a part of history that I wasn't aware of before. It sparked my interest to learn more about Yugoslavian history.

A moving foray into a conflict that I was unfamiliar with. While she acknowledges the atrocities that were committed during the Bosnian War, Morris shies away from the melodramatic, instead focusing on how conflict creates a new normal: one of powerlessness and isolation, of failing to recognise the city you call your home and the human urge to protect its multicultural identity as it's stripped away by force. The senselessness of war is never so apparent as when explored through a group of people fighting not only for essentials but to find connection when under siege and cut off from the outside world. I wanted to think that some of the symbolism was too on the nose at times, but Morris writes so beautifully and so convincingly that Black Butterflies remains compelling at every turn.

Sensitively written, but devastating insight of experiences of Bosnia & Savarajeo seige.  Won't forget this & gave me insight of people living through the cuurent war in Ukraine.
