I been looking to increase by reading of Irish female authors – and a friend recommended the ‘Dublin Drag Mystery’ series by Kitty Murphy. Being in a reading slump, I thought that the book might be just what I needed and so I decided to give the first book a go over Christmas.

Dark, twisty and wickedly funny the books are set in a fictional version of the Dublin drag scene and are a delight to read from start to finish.

In ‘Death in Heels’, Our protagonist is Fi McKinnery, who is best friends with Robyn (aka May B, Dublin newest Drag Queen) and member of the fabulous TRASH family, when one of the family is murdered. Now, the garda are convinced that the murder is simply a case of a random, unfortunate mugging but Fi is not so sure and decides to start her own investigation and very quickly, the situation escalates and it soon becomes evident that someone is targeting the local Drag Queens.

For a series to reach the top of my ‘To Be Read’ list – in fact for me to completely ignore my list in order to complete the series within three days, just shows how much I loved this series. It’s camp, soapy, funny, dark, twisty and all is the very best way. I laughed out loud, even cried for some of the characters (seriously, Del needs a positive storyline in book 4!).

Do yourself a favour in 2024 and pick up one of the Dublin Drag Mystery series by Kitty Murphy – it will be well-worth your time.
