This book is a masterpiece, an oxymoron that is both a concise and comprehensive of a people's history and culture.

A stunning poetic history of African people - who would become African Americans - and the challenges they've been forced to face throughout time. The emphasis of the story, however, is not the struggle but how time and again, those same people have persevered and developed their culture and identity throughout time. The illustrations are gorgeous and the words equally so.

This short story flowed like a powerful poem. I had no idea what it was about, I just wanted something else to listen to. And I'm glad I listened to it. For even though we have freedom, a lot had to occur to get that freedom. Even though a lot was lost a lot of amazing people flourished throughout history, to inspire African Americans.
