A real disappointment. At first I was intrigued by the fact that there was very little given away detail-wise, combined with the unusual writing style. But then nothing was added to all the mystery, which is frustrating because you can't create an emotional attachment to an enigma.

I feel like you either like this type of writing or you don't. These are difficult novels in that they are slow, almost entirely objectively narrated, and both invoke a sense of unease in the reader as if something is continually on the precipice of happening but never quite does. There are recurring themes of déjà vu in both novels and a heavy sense of voyeurism in 'Jealousy.' If you've seen and liked Alain Resnais' Last Year at Marienbad (1961) which Robbe-Grillet wrote, you'll enjoy these novels.

an unusual, excellent book. the narrator and focus on the visual aspects are unlike anything i've read before, or done better than most stuff that appears to imitate it.

When trying to describe how the landscape of In the Labyrinth was structured, I referenced this painting. Robbe-Grillet does not depict two worlds or dimensions but a Möbius strip world where two (or more)ways of thinking meld.

I kind of felt like I was going insane with this one.
