This is two tales in one book. Our main story that shares the title is about a man named Joe who's lost his sense of purpose and is spending a lonely Christmas Eve atop a mountain to do some bow hunting. He meets two people, a man and woman, with two very different stories, and needs to figure out who to trust and who is dangerous.

This was a fun, fast-paced story that kept me guessing until the end. I really liked the situation, though I did find a couple of the little details difficult to believe (such as being unable to call 911 on a locked phone).

The second story, Love Nest, is a surprising tale about a man and woman who have been captured by Maine hillbillies for some unknown, nefarious purpose. The hillbillies have strange demands for the two of them and they are forced to comply... With surprisingly Lovecraftian results. I honestly loved how bizarre this one was, though I felt like the casual mentions of assault could have been handled better.

I wasn't sure what to expect out of this book but it really surprised me and I never could predict what was going to happen in the story.

There were 2 novellas in this book. The first, A Cold Place for Dying, had an interesting premise. I liked Joe’s character initially, how he didn’t know who or what to believe, and how he tried to do the right thing. That said, the ending just didn’t come through like I’d hoped. It fell flat of my expectations for the backstory of both Dan and Katie.

The second novella, The Love Nest, drew my interest immediately with a slasher movie feeling akin to Wrong Turn or The Hills Have Eyes. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of how the female character was written at all. It read as obviously written by a man and not something I could relate to as a realistic response in the situation at all. Unfortunately, that made me think back on the first story in a different light as well. It wasn’t a bad story, but the female representation left me with a poor taste in my mouth.

To be clear though, I don’t feel the author was attempting to represent women in a bad light and it won’t prevent me from reading something about else by the author to see if it works better for me.
