The main girl is just so so dumb. She always makes the most rash foolish decisions and doesn’t just shut the fuck up

This overall was boring and a bit repeating until the last four chapters. And the characters felt flat.

I didn't get a ton of depth out of this book. I think Alex Asher can take some time to world build, tell me more about the setting in a meaningful way instead of dumping something new and moving into the next point.

Where to start?

Isla is weak and doesn't do much of anything. Her powers are awakened by someone else, and now she's the most powerful nightstarwildling of all time. Well, Starling from Celeste. Everyone fawns over her, she has the MOSTEST SPECIALEST POWERS OF ALL TIME!!!1!
SpoilerFreeing the two kingdoms from needing power injections
.

The entire book is Oro being the LI and doing the important stuff, while Isla gets memories and only occasionally does plot-relevant things. I actually like Oro. He is the one tolerable character.

The names are nonsense. Arvel and Singrid sound like bad JRPG translation mishaps, while Urn, Cronan, and the Dreks feel ripped from real life (Cronan the Barbarian, Drek from Ratchet and Clank). Even Arvel and Singrid sound like video game names (Arval from Fire Emblem: Three Hopes, Singrid from Ingrid).

Also: Grim is straight-up irredeemable here. I loathe him. Why the hell does Isla still love someone who has been so terrible to her, while he's supposed to be a LI?

The book attempts to justify the Skyling curse being terrible, too. It doesn't work. 'Uniquely wicked'? Not really.

I felt a whirlwind of emotions through this one. Aster really does a great job of having us fall for Oro and Isla while simultaneously falling in love with Grim and Isla. I'm a little confused and unsure of how to feel after reading that ending. I felt like a lot of the finale of Nightbane was reliant on shock factor. I'm not really sure if I want to continue book 3, but I enjoyed reading of Isla as a ruler in training. I felt like she had a lot of the heart and good qualities of a ruler, but I felt most badly for Oro who got caught in this triangle with someone who very much was not over Grim. Both loves with Oro and Grim were very much unique to the MMC, but certainly tropey. We had the dark, dominant, and violent lover in Grim and the sweet, patient, and nurturing Oro. I most likely will pick up book 3 just to see how this all plays out, but it was easy to eat up Nightbane,
