Hosseini is somehow able to convey the most tragic tales into something not mortally depressing. The unquestioned relationships that exist in Afghanistan between the genders and classes are highlighted by the interwoven lives of the 3 main characters. The oppressive boundaries inherited by the generations are unthinkable to an American woman in the twentieth century, but Hosseini carefully reminds readers of another world. The characters were relatable and the plot was thick. I would highly recommend this book. It's hard to say, but I may have enjoyed this more than Kite Runner.
