What a beautiful piece of writing to make you bawl your eyes out by the end of it and that’s the charm of Hosseini’s books. It leaves a mark and makes you reflect long after you have read the book.
I felt nothing but anger throughout the majority of this book. The ending had me sobbing and I needed time to process every that happened. I had to stop reading at certain points in this book because the emotions were just too strong. It was a great book and I would recommend it.
This book was an emotional rollercoaster ride the entire way. It was heartbreaking as much as it was wonderful.
This book narrates almost 30 years of Afghan history, from the Soviet invasion, to the taking and post-possession of talismans in the government. The story is told from the perspective of Mariam and Laila who are constant victims of an oppressive and repressive government against women. The lives of both women are united when due to different circumstances in the life of each one; they are forced to live the same destiny to live in a polygamy marriage with Rasheed, a frustrated, abusive and controlling man.
The level of resistance and subordination of these women left me with my soul in a thread, the author of this book did a spectacular work of investigation but especially when describing the different scenarios that both men and women lived in this country during the Taliban government, as it was subject to strict rules.
Reading this book left a bitter taste in my mouth with the helplessness I felt while reading it. It was very difficult for me to believe the inequality and the little freedom that women lived in this time under all those rules and restrictions. Every page I turned left my chest feeling tighter. However, it is an amazing book, it was not easy to read, many times I felt so helpless that I had to pause it to calm down because it is a story that will hit you and make you feel a lot of beautiful as well as too many heartbreaking things. The writing was absolutely beautiful and simple. The way the author minimally covered the government of Afghanistan was somehow genius.
