I wil begin by thanking NetGalley and Arctis Books for the opportunity to read "The Might".
<b>This book concludes "The Raven's rings" trilogy by Siri Pettersen in the best way possible.
It's a beautiful structure built upon the previous books with much care and dedication!</b>
I love series that give the impression of a large unknown setting, diverse and well developed societies, and really impactful main characters!
For me, Siri Pettersen managed to surpass my expectations in terms of character development and world building.
I can safely say now that we have a continous story, well though out and well written from beginning to end! Hirka grows and transforms as a person - as she mentions at one time- she is unrecognisable from the girl we met in "Odin's child" and probably would be a terrifying thing for Hirka of the past to see ... there..she really was a child...now she's a rational adult who suffered a lot of trauma,but managed to overcome and surpass everyone's expectations for her.
A similar growth we can see in the other MC, Rime...although a little less detailed and smooth (due to the fact that Rime is not our main voice in the "Raven's Rings").
In addition, <b> and the best choice that was made in my opinion</b>, a lot of <b>characters are constantly repainted in terms of which side should they stay on, morals, what is the correct choice,and many more character decisions..even if they are no longer present</b>.
I love the fact that every character we met..from Urd, Naiell and Graal, Damayanti, Rime and Hirka, and many more..have connections beyond their striclty active choices! I enjoy the fact that Umpiri are more than humanized..they are a people! Their idiosyncrasies, their culture, their hierarchy and very real emotions made me relate to their fight, just like the main character!(who got even more confused in what role should she fit..savior of the ymlings, of umpiri, judge or executioner )
I believe my favorite character is the Seer (when it comes to new POVs)...he contributed A LOT in Hirka's education about herself (first and foremost), in developing other characters further(Graal, Naiell and Skerri) as well as the plot. (loved that little twist regarding the 1000 year war! ^^)
Another one was Raun...although we don't get that much time with him...I kind of like how he's an abitious grandfather.
Skerri...it's complicated...her character's journey is way different from what you'll expect, but I don't think everyone will agree her actions are validated by her story...anyway, 'rabbits die' :)))
<b>So..in the end, Siri Petterson really knows how to create complex characters that stay with you not only for 1 act or contribution, but for the mental impact ad avalanche of change in perspective they create around them!Add to that great relationships and wonderfully crafted societies, and I believe you have everything you want</b>
In terms of plot, I really enjoyed the constant increase in stakes(that burial scene was intense) , the easy and smooth flow of time passing (winter in the Umpiri world is something else! 0_0), and overall decisions made by Hirka and Rime.
My only critique is the ending...I would have wanted Hirka to 'fly solo', but it's just my preference.(sometime before in the narrative...when everything clicked with her and the Seer's information..I though her story will end in a specific way, given the circumstances...but that is only my personal desire and no flaw of the book)
I highly recommend this series and eagerly await the translation of the "Vardari"!
If you enjoy lots of details about cultures(based on Norse mythology), great MCs and a beautifull story beginning to end with a coming of age component, "The Raven Rings" is for you! If you like the first book, I promise you'll love the whole thing!! ^_^
