the only reason this isnt a 5 for me is because i had like some trouble visualising some things in the book ? like idk if it was just me but i couldnt imagine ark island in my mind. like the outside scene w soledad??? idk i just
i needed more imagery i guess
other than that love love love love
i literally couldnt give a shit if this book was only written as a money grab

I wasn't sure about this one at first, but it got much better as it went along.  I loved getting to see Juliette and Warner and Kenji and all the old gang again.  So excited that the Shatter Me series is back!!!

i admit that i wasn't too interested in this at first. i went into it just for warnette and the OG gang and im very happy to report that i was very, very well fed. was worried that i was gonna be collecting bread crumbs the whole time but nope. aaron, juliette and the others are still very much present in the story (though juliette is understandably a little out of commission) since they're a huge part of james's life--not to mention theyre literal government leaders responsible for an entire society--but the point is, they were great supporting roles who weren't overshadowing the leads but not entirely taking the backseat either. i was satisfied with what i got from them.

and speaking of leads, really did end up liking james and rosabelle. their chemistry was well established and remained consistent and organic, and they both have really interesting and complex personalites/personal arcs. i felt especially endeared to rosabelle and fascinated with the way her mind works but also absolutely heartbroken at the things she went through that made her the way she is, whereas james is still my prince and it was great to see how much he's evolved and how different he is than before, but still somehow the same in all the ways that matter. i fucking love the assassin x target or "falling for your mark" trope so my interest was immediately piqued once it made sense that its what james and rosa's dynamic was gonna be.

the tropes were surely troping, but even with all the effort put into the romance, the plot wasnt left behind at all. some sequels as of late are prone to being weakly written and obviously only exist for nostalgia bait and to keep generating hype and money, but i gotta give tahereh her flowers for this one bc it actually seems like she's got something solid going on here. it makes sense for the new republic to still be facing problems even after a decade of coming into power. klaus is an impressibly unique villain that will most definitely cause a lot of problems be very hard to take down, plus the ark island folks do seem like proper pricks that'll be a pain to deal with. i like that. gimme all the action! i am more than ready to be back in this world. so far this is really shaping up to be a pretty damn good second gen series and if tahareh mafi keeps this up then and i will happily lock the fuck in for the next book or two. 4.75 stars ;)

To be so real this is a 3 star book, but Aaron and Kenji alone brought it up a star. The only scenes I cared about were when the old gang was there, and they were great. Everything else, however, was just okay. I actually don’t care about Rosabelle at all. I like James (probably because he’s written as a cross between Kenji and Warner) but he’s a bit of an idiot.

Honestly, I would have eaten this up so much more if it was focused on James and the old gang’s response to the remainder of the Reestablishment. Would have been 5 stars if it was solely written from Aaron, Kenji, Juliette and James’ POVs.
