Okay, admittedly, halfway through the book it was clear how one of the plots would be resolved. But that doesn't make it any less satisfying to see it executed.

There are a few moments in the book when the characters feel mildly out of character. Not so much in the way they act, that's sound, just in their choice of words. But that doesn't take a way from an engaging read.

Though one bit was a bit annoying. I would one day like to see what happens if the Federation makes a good faith gesture and just shares information with the supposed enemy. I get why so shortly after the Klingon war the situation is tense. But why not at least try to build bridges with a joint mission instead? But in the end even though I might wish for a different outcome, I can somewhat understand why they choose to not risk cooperating with the Klingons where there could be tech that could be turned into a weapon.

We haven’t gotten an Ortegas-centric episode of the show yet, so it’s fun to get a bit more of a peek into her and her background through this adventure. A mysterious alien artifact, a dangerous planet, ornery Klingons…all in all, quite the fun Trek adventure.

(Very mild spoilers: The only flaw for me wasn’t actually a flaw with the book, but a happenstance of my reading: I’d just read the TOS ebook novella _Miasma_, so this made for two Trek stories in a row with a landing party trapped on a rainy, muddy planet being chased by swarms of hungry giant bugs while cut off from all communication with the Enterprise. I had to keep reminding myself it wasn’t quite as derivative as it seemed.)

A lot of these Star Trek tie in novels are just okay, but this one was better than average and wasn’t too cheesy/sappy. I enjoyed the plot and think characterization was handled pretty well. A good read for when you’re in the mood for something fun.

Really captured the shows tone and characters. Best tie-in so far.
