I was called dumb and poor in so many ways. But I enjoyed the existentialism and bits of surrealism.

The journal entry style chapters felt easy to choke down despite the heavy material. Kazuko has an uptight easyness about her-- that slowly unravels as the novel goes on. Short but poignant.

Dazai's style is so simple and straight-forward that even when you know something is coming, the ease in which he states it frequently ends up being quite shocking. Throughout the The Setting Sun there are some vivid pieces of writing that are so deeply tragic, which to put lightly, are totally and utterly heart-wrenching. Plot development and action are secondary to the emotional issues of the story, to the point where you can truly feel the agony of characters.

I also really loved the long letters - it brings to mind a sort of ‘stream of consciousness’ style of writing.
