Another excellent book. I do think sometimes he rambled on too much but I enjoyed all of it. Love the characters.

I listened to this as an audiobook. Really enjoyed the setting of the story and the delivery from the narrator. The first half of this book is somewhat of a slog, but the buildup in part 1 really pays off in the subsequent chapters.

The book really kicks off in part 2 and it is an exciting ride from that point until the very end. This book is really improved by having read the previous books, as there is significant overlap between each story. With that being said, this is a good entry point to the series and a very thrilling tale with elements of space horror.

Rather a pivotal novel in the series and to be frank, it kinda underwhelmed me? The escape and flight across the Galaxy was terribly short. Situations/perils are repeated and the pacing feels off? I wouldn’t mind all the other remarks and truly loved some stuff in their (such as the cups ceremony) but the pacing between situations feels off. It pushes you away from the story and interesting beats. The last chapters on Luna feel forced and tacked on for padding or because some stuff needed to be set up even tho the story had already reached it’s conclusion.  That said, the good parts were very good. And the internal conflict of Garo, a man losing everything he’s known except for his staunch believes is strongly written.

The book with a split personality. I'm not talking about any character or events but the way the story is told in two separate parts. More than half of the novel (60%) deals with the events already described in the previous 3 books of the Horus Heresy. So why should you read it? You SHOULDN'T. It's the same rehash without anything new. We have indeed a new protagonist, but being witness to the previous events doesn't really add anything to his character development. He's just a basic soldier. And I don't think rehashing the same event for more than half of the book was a good idea. Thinks are really slow and boring.

Then BOOM, the second part is coming and shatter your expectations (which were already low due to the first part). It's a fantastic piece of action and character development, all in one, with amazing commentaries on what is happening in the galaxy. As well, we have the chance to see the Sol system for the first time in the Horus Heresy. Garro proved to be an interesting and conflicted individual in the end. And the frantic pace of the second half, with not knowing what will happen and their constant fight for survival with very low odds, makes for a very good read.
