Basically it's a Road Trip novel. A bunch of people get on a ship and try to reach a certain point while saintly obeying the quintessential Murphy law -everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. The characters are fairly one dimensional and while the Death Guard seem to be a potentially interesting Legion they severely lack characterization and depth. It has its moments but they are not very many. It is certainly readable for 40k enthusiasts but utterly unremarkable.

After finishing the book I gotta say that yeah I feel like they could have made the third book larger and combined the two stories. #24in48readathon
I feel the writing of this is denser and richer, which I really enjoyed. The character of Garro is solid and, in a galaxy of Astartes meat heads, independent of the other characters already crafted. I appreciate how this book works to flesh out the betrayal of Horus with more intrigue and grandeur.
However, I feel this book revealed that the expansive Horus Heresy book series will not be the same pace as the previous three books. Characters, legions, and the galaxy all need to align to the pivotal moment we know happens at the end of the road (at least for all 40k players). So it’s a monolithic undertaking but I do enjoy this series and think this was a solid addition.
