Eisenstein is successful in breaking new ground and in retelling the story of Isstvan from a different perspective, compelling in both and adding some welcome new blood to build up the ever-depleting cast of characters. Eisenstein still skirts the 'why' of it all (plenty of time to explore that across the Horus Heresy series and beyond) but it succeeds in instilling some adventure into proceedings and again ends with a centrepiece battle worthy of the conflict it represents. To top it all off, we get another, closer look at Rogal Dorn, who I think is a straight-up geezer and one of my favourite Primarchs. A strong outing for the Heresy overall.
👍
A little slow on the get go and some silly grammatical errors here and there but it's a fun ride once you get past the first third or so. Lots of juicy action packed drama as they make the Titular Flight the fuck away from all their evil brothers.
The focus here is a lot tighter with less PoV's and places to track which works really well for this story. I found myself missing some of the original cast but Garro's a good stand in for Loken when you need some stoic hero to swing his steel balls around in between their private moments of doubt and reflection. They're all angry space men at the end of the day anyway.
Also WHY did they pretend like Rogal Dorn never heard of Loken when they met in the first book???? He recommended him to the Mournival! Come on man. They did him so dirty 😡

The fourth book in the Horus Heresy series, is a thrilling read that stands out. It follows Battle-Captain Nathaniel Garro of the Death Guard as he witnesses the treachery at Isstvan III and escapes to warn the Emperor.
The story is gripping, with well-developed characters and intense action. Garro's journey is filled with tension and moral dilemmas, making him a compelling protagonist. The pace is steady, keeping you hooked from start to finish, and the insights into the early days of the Heresy are fascinating.
