This is an amazing true story, and the graphic novel adaptation allows the story to be available to more people. The images of what happened at Auschwitz and other camps are haunting and terrifying.

This graphic novel was enlightening and well-produced. The storyline flowed in a cohesive manner, and the coloration and illustrations were lovely but fitting to the melancholy of the topic. While this story highlights Camp BIIb of Auschwitz, the front camp for surprise inspections like by the Red Cross, we do see a more comfortable version of the infamous death camp. However, though things were moderately better, the horrors of the Nazi camp were still evident and shown within the story as well. I appreciated the additional information at the back of the book about some of the characters presented and their historical significance and outcomes. An enlightening story about survival.

 I have not read the full novel but read this specifically for an annual reading challenge I'm working on, which required a graphic novel. Unfortunately, that means I'm not able to say if this is a good adaptation of the novel. My opinions are solely based on the graphic novel as a stand-alone. Considering the title, books don't actually play a large role in the story. Yes, the young girl is an avid reader and is given the role of caring for the the precious, few books that had made it into Auschwitz, but not much more is said about them. The story focuses on life inside the camp, including the illnesses and execution of prisoners, as well as introduces us to some inspirational characters, and unfortunately, the notorious Josef Mengele. The epilogue was especially interesting, giving details about what information was based on actual events and people, including what happened to them after the war.
