This was such an enjoyable read, I love Lucia and the fact that she is a flawed character that lives and loves and grows as a person throughout the book was so fantastic to me. Her struggles with anxiety and panic disorder really resonated with me, and I appreciated it so much.
Her struggles as well, being the oldest child and that constant strive for perfection and making your parents proud, it hits really close to home and I almost cried a few times, bravo.
Adelaide was an amazing contrast to Lucia as well, and was so fun to read, and it was amazing how she was exactly what Lucia needed. She pulled her out of her shell, treated her with the love and care she deserved. It was so wonderful. I am eyeing the second book as we speak.
That being said there were some things that did detract from my enjoyment of the book, and is why I am rating this only 4 stars. This book could have used more help in terms of editing and formatting. There were a lot of times where a word would be cut off half way at the end of a line and carried over to the next, and it slowed me down while reading. The character Mairan's name flip flopped spelling a few times in the first few chapters between Mairan and Marian and Mairin. It was confusing. I noticed that at one point a character "adverts" their eyes instead of "averts" their eyes.
One of my biggest pet peeves in books that came up in this one is when someone refers to eye anatomy incorrectly. At one point Lucia's grandmother "narrows her pupils" at her. No, no she didn't. She narrowed her EYES. The pupil is just the black dot in the center of your eye, and you do not have manual control over it. Please, please learn basic eye anatomy.
Again, this is overall a fantastic book and I loved it and really enjoyed reading it, I'm just being nitpicky XD

Lucia Dol'Auclair is not the heir her family wanted. She does not receive her magisk gifts when expected, she is an anxious, shy girl, and is the next in line for the witches to become the Grand Elder. When the Orbis Libra that the Elder is vessel for in order to maintain balance for all mystics chooses her to compete for the role of Grand Elder, she must fight in a set of trials to lead the vampires, werewolves, and witches. These trials are further complicated when Lucia falls for one of her opponents, a vampire name Adelaide.
This book is all about Lucia and her development. She is coming out of her shell, learning that the things she believes about herself and her coven are not true, and she is also experiencing a whole new world. I would describe this as Hunger Games meets Harry Potter meets the Lesbian Pride flag lol. I found myself wishing I was reading this while I enjoyed other stories and I am SO glad I have the ARC for the second book because this cliffhanger is vicious.
