Finally got around to this one. It was a very quick read. I didn't love it as much as I expected, because so often Jack's observations and voice were transparently adult. I also found myself wishing to hear things from the mother's perspective. But it was a unique page-turner, and I'm glad I read it.
The first half was better than the last, but not on any fault of the writer's. It's just such a realistic story about horrible things that some people go through, and how to move on, if possible. Honestly, I would make it a required read for anyone going into child psychology.

This book is really disturbing in so many ways. And having it all in the view point of a 5 year old makes it even more upsetting. I didn't need to read this book. Time to try and block it out and think of something good and uplifting.
Heel indrukkwekkend verhaal.
Al loopt het veel positiever af dan ik had verwacht. Wat niet slecht is, maar gewoon niet wat ik had verwacht.

Beautifully written through the eyes of a child, Donoghue brings the reader back to a time when life was simpler. Nostalgia is a common feeling when reading this book and trying to fathom why Jack acts the way he does and believes in the things he believes in as he lives in an extremely horrible situation of captivity. One thing that gripped me the most about Room was the honesty and emotion you feel as Jack struggles to overcome challenges that are beyond his comprehension, or his sense of the world. The journey in this book is a difficult one but was a great read overall!

I have tasked myself with going back and reading "popular" books that I haven't read yet, and this was one on my list!
Honestly, this book was incredible. I read it with the premise that I wasn't going to over analyze and I just wanted to experience it. I figured it wasn't going to be the "perfect" story of this kind of abuse, but I didn't care. I wanted to disappear into the book and not think about my own everyday problems.
The wya this is told through a five year old's eyes? Incredible. Absolutely amazing. I have read about many captive situations, and I never really considered how a kid would think about it. That would be their "normal".... And what happens when they go out to the real "normal"? It's interesting.
I do wish this book carried on for a bit longer or had an epilogue. There likely isn't a perfect way to end a novel like this, but I wanted to see more of how Jack developed in his new world and how his Mom readjusted. But, that's my personal hopes. I like seeing the positive growth.
I will also say, this is one of the few books that the "slow" parts had me hooked. I don't know what magic sauce Emma put into this, but I actually enjoyed the slow sections.
I want to read more by Emma now. This book was charming and terrifying. I liked it.
Four out of five stars.
