Short stories that are so short there is no plot.  Skips around in time to make it more confusing.

We listened to this one on audio- Brolin clearly has some writerly instincts. He can pair words and phrases into gripping descriptions. His memories of childhood were not gentle. He has lived a hard life and saw things that might make another crumble under their weight. I applaud his honest assessment of his own character and choices. He did not flinch when turning the mirror on himself.

The book felt disjointed at times and he reused some descriptors/images more than once- I wasn’t sure if that was purposeful or if the book just needed a bit more editing. He included some fiction short stories but none were complete with a beginning/middle/end…the book did give me a better sense of him as a person but the jumps between true memories and scraps of fiction didn’t always flow. I loved hearing about his friendship with Cormac McCarthy which was my original impetus for starting this book.

Listened for about 2 hours. I like Josh Brolins acting and his handsomeness. His book felt like an ego trip. Someone said a wannabe poet, I agree. I think he's had a difficult upbringing with a lot of hard living. It's like he believes he's so cool while talking about the abusive way he was raised and how depressed he is. Just not for me.
