It just... Went from one gross thing to another. The only likeable character died in his first scene. I decided I'd had enough when got to a rape scene presented without any sense of horror or pity on behalf of the victim.

I liked this more than my year of rest and relaxation but still it had no plot. It’s just nonsense from start to finish I need to stop listening to booktok recs lmao

This book was nasty. And I mean that in both senses of the word - it was mean spirited and it was, quite literally, gross. (I suppose for a brutal portrayal of feudal life in the middle ages, that could be expected?) I do not feel like the book's blurb did justice to what the book was actually about. Moshfegh has an absolute talent for lyricism and a bizarre POV, but this just wasn't for me. At the end,  I’m not sure what was the point of all the cruelty and disgusting scenarios. It seemed all too absurd to be meaningful, but too heavy to be funny. What is satire without the humor called?

Filthy and depraved and unputdownable, a literary car crash. Her first foray into an omniscient narrator in a novel was a brilliant one with even the side characters being fully fleshed out. For fans of Robert Eggers.
