Not bad. I've decided to end the series here though idc about the other books
4.5⭐️ There were so many crazy twists and turns in this book (possibly too many).
I cannot wait to read Charm, I need to know what happened during their time together!

I am so glad I decided to listen to this on audio rather than read it. I'm pretty sure I would have lost my mind trying to wade my way through the pages of nothing happening just to get to the few paragraphs of interesting stuff. Because I won't deny that there are certainly interesting moments in this book. The problem is that there is just so much nothing that I zoned out multiple times and still knew what was going on.
Aside from the sheer length of this book, another issue I had was that I had no idea who a lot of these characters were. The main cast I knew, but there were some characters mentioned in this book whose names I didn't recognize. Yet Grace talked like she'd known them since the beginning. Were they in past books and I forgot? Were they just introduced here and the author was retconning to say they were always part of the friend group? I have no idea. I think one of the newer characters died in this but since I didn't make any connection with them, it left no impact on me. There's a character like that in every single one of these books so far.
I don't know how to categorize this, but I need to point out that Hudson swears a LOT in his POV. It felt like he dropped the F bomb every sentence, and I just have no idea how to feel about that. Grace's language could get a little coarse as well but usually when the situation demanded it. Hudson just swore constantly.
Let's talk about the good stuff. Despite how weird and unnecessary the whole "mate" thing is, I did like the explanation behind it. It made sense to me and gave some decent world-building. I also liked how the author leaned into the whole vampire "biting/drinking blood is equivalent to sex" thing. Something about the multiple times it came up brought a smile to my face. I also have to admit that the solution to Cyrus was delightfully devious. I just loved how they put him in jail with a pissed off lady who was bent on torturing him. Last but not least, love how Jaxon and Flint were developing. I feel like I missed huge chunks of their relationship but every time I saw them progressing, I got invested again.
My favorite character turned out to be one of the gargoyles. I already forgot his name but I loved him and every moment he was on the page. The scene where he turned himself to stone was really moving for me and I was so happy to see him coming back at the climax. Remy the warlock was pretty great too, though at times he did feel like a rip-off of Magnus Bane. Can the next series be about them?
At this point, I might as well finish the series out. I just wish there was more evidence that an editor was involved in the making of these books.

I devoured this book in a single day; it was that good. While there were some predictable elements, as is common in YA novels, the execution was impeccable, making it action-packed and thoroughly enjoyable. What truly impresses me is the transformation the story underwent from the first book, which I found lacking. It has evolved into something much better, and I'm glad I stuck it out this long.
