Truly one of the trashiest YA Magical Creatures Romance Series - but completely addictive. I would definitely watch this as a tv series or movie though…
one star, for it being over. if you’re seeing this it means i survived this book. which was not an easy feat. this is my least favorite book aside from crave, because it was awful. i really don’t know how tracy wolff manages to make grace a worse character with every book, it’s a wicked form of talent.
so much happened in this book that just irked me. and let’s be real, aside from the atrocious writing, pop-culture references, THE GODDAMN CHAPTER NAMES, and just the decisions made by the characters, it was mostly grace. but let’s start with something a little more general, since this is the last book for now and all. when i first picked this book up, i thought the chapter titles were ridiculous. cringy, out-of-date attempts at relatability with her younger target audience. and yeah, they’ve gotten so much worse. i found myself skipping the titles which says enough. not to mention (again) the pop culture references. it really takes you out of the scene when you have a group of characters scheming how to save everyone they love and then you’re jumping to discussing how you’re going to make matching bedazzled shirts for a bts concert.
which begs the question: does this book expect to be taken seriously? the combination of trying to basically save paranormal humanity but also making shitty jokes and having cringeworthy scenes full of nonsensical garbage, it just doesn’t add up. especially when the characters are supposed to be fighting for their lives in this impossible trial, but there’s potions that are making them do ballet and act like chickens? i can appreciate humor in fantasy books but this was just in-your-face, obnoxious, and unneeded. subtlety is key, people.
now. grace. let me just take a minute. FIRST of all, let me start with the way she reacted when the other told hudson to stop drinking from her. NOW i understand that grace is a strong independent woman who can do whatever she wants whenever she wants, including with hudson. but let’s put it in perspective. hudson is the most powerful person in the group (aside from remy the plot device) and if it came down to it, he would be the one to save everyone’s asses. SO IT WOULD MAKE SENSE TO HAVE THE MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN YOUR PARTY AT FULL CAPABILITY YES? the others weren’t slut shaming you, they were simply worried about hudson not being able to be out in sunlight, especially in this world-saving situation where you never know what’s going to happen. BUT NO! grace got all upset at everyone, didn’t consider the others perspective, and continued to let hudson drink from her. OF COURSE the shitty final battle was at MIDNIGHT!!
and OF COURSE, if grace wasn’t already “powerful” enough, we had to go all percy jackson and make her a demigod. why exactly? yknow maybe it’s because grace is the most awful book protagonist to grace (ha) the earth. her extra powers were just the crutch she needed so she could stop being dragged around and supported by all her friends. kind of! you’d best believe that she still isn’t capable of much on her own!
AND. this one is a big deal to me. when grace entered the gargoyle court with her friends, they all treated her with respect, because she is the gargoyle queen. grace had some shortcomings in training and battle that really irked her, and GOT JEALOUS when isadora (typical sjm mc making an appearance. yay.) was better than her? because she’s the gargoyle queen? so she should get all the praise? and when chastain is completely honest with her and tells her he won’t accept her challenge because he only accepts ‘worthy’ challenges, she gets mad again. she doesn’t dig deep and train harder, or try to improve herself in any way, she doesn’t acknowledge her faults and search for a way to get better. she gets mad. and then she pulls a fast one on all the gargoyles, leading them to need to be turned to stone again which was really shitty of her (especially that she was shocked when jikan did.. what he said he would do.. like hellooooo consequences of your own actions). AND THEN AGAIN gets all sad and weepy when chastain was like hey you did something really shitty to us we don’t support you anymore we’re not going to battle for you. i still don’t understand why they did, especially when she gave cyrus the god stone.
now, hudson did a really powerful thing in this book. he opened up to grace about the pain and trauma that his power causes him. which is a really big step for him. you’d expect grace to be supportive and kind to her mate, to do whatever possible to help him and make him feel better. yeah no please let’s be real. when hudson told grace that every time he dissipates someone, he loses a piece of his soul, and grace responded “no one is stealing your soul hudson, you’re letting them take it.” LIKE WHAT IN THE MANIPULATION??? HUH???? WHAT IN THE GASLIGHTING?? i feel so bad for hudson, the man does not deserve this manipulative self-centered piece of garbage as a mate. this is probably what upset me most about this book. i don’t even understand how the author thought this was okay for grace to say.
the plot was whatever, it was nothing i didn’t expect. no plot twist caught me off guard, and there were no real stakes for the characters. at no point did i truly ‘worry’ for the well-being, safety, or lives of the characters. i say ‘worry’ because let’s be real, i would throw a party if grace died. the author couldn’t kill off any character who played a somewhat important part in the book. only side characters and the members of the order whose names i don’t remember hearing since the first book died. calder was the most main character that died, but it wasn’t sad or emotional. i can’t fully be invested in a story if i know that none of the main characters will come to any harm past losing a limb, which was probably the most serious thing to happen TO a main character. but of course, his struggle was never focused on, it’s all about grace.
and lastly, what the fuck was with the word DADDY in this book. that was truly the last straw for me.
until the next book.

Twist after twist and nearly nonstop action. Victories and losses, new friends and family. This book kept my attention the whole time I’m going to dive into the next.

Fulgor.
