Easy reading about a dysfunctional family

I like books with multiple character viewpoints. This was an easy read, but I feel like it left a few loose strings at the end. It built up various plots and then the book ended. Other than that I enjoyed it.

Had to skip through some parts that did not hold my interest.

I honestly just failed to feel compassion for the entire list of characters. They were all so self-involved and slightly delusional, and the toxic relationships were too painful to manage. Also, sorry not sorry, I just don't need continuous details of the sexual fantasies of a woman in her 70's. A little TMI for me.

Beach read trying to  be on level of Emily Henry but not as good / fun. About a widow mom and her 3 adult children - all disfunxtional in some way - on a cruise. It all wraps up in a bow at end.

Of 500+ epidemiologists surveyed in the New York Times this week, only 20% said that they would consider traveling by plane this summer. I have paid attention and plan to avoid jets. I just wish that someone had suggested that I avoid this book, too.

This book takes a light-hearted approach to some BIG issues, such as the suicidal death of a parent, suicidal ideation, low self-esteem, sexual-identity, and gender roles. Those are a lot of intense, serious subjects!! The tone, exemplified by the matriarch of the family is one of cute and willful ignorance. It did not sit well with me. Book clubs may “enjoy”to delve into these deeper issues over a bottle of wine and cheese and crackers. My own life has been too often touched by suicide for me to enjoy this shallow approach to the topic, however. I do think there should be a trigger warning! I was expecting a romp through Europe with more typical family problems. The travelogue of each stop was (again) cute and shallow, with tour guides TELLING the reader lots of facts about the areas. No subtle nuance or especially descriptive writing here. I do enjoy reading a lot of Reece Witherspoon’s book club picks, but this is not one of them!
