This was a quick and goofy read that I really liked. A band of pirates raid Charles Darwin's ship only to find it has no gold... but science. They race off to an adventure in Victorian England to fight the Bishop (of course religion vs. science....) who has kidnapped Darwin's brother.

The whole story was ridiculous, flippant, and included a healthy supply of anachronistic inventions and footnotes. In a way, it reminded me of Douglas Adams' Hitch-hikers Guide series.

(spoilers:)
The only thing I didn't like was the "fight" between Darwin and the pirate dressed as the Holy Ghost. It was just sacrilegious in a way that made me feel weird.

a fun, speedy and fast-paced read! Love the style

This is the book that the movie The Pirates! Band of Misfits is based on, which is one of my favorite animated movies ever. This book cracked me up; it was really different from the movie, but funny in much the same absurd way. I'll be picking up more in the series.

Absolutely hilariously amusing.

I'm no stranger to smiling or giggling at words on a page, but this book had me guffawing--out loud, alone--a number of times. It's just damn fun.

This and the second book--The Pirates! In an Adventure with Ahab--are available in one paperback together, but I really dig the little hardcover versions. The third book has them adventuring with Communists. Heh. I can't wait.

I was laughing on desk at work reading it. Its a funny, quick read.

A light, slim read that is very silly and very funny. A perfect way to escape for an afternoon or evening and have a chuckle.
