It was a good romance book but the ending of the book was surprising. Not a good surprise. It made the rest of the story confusing.

It was cute! As of right now, I don’t think I’ll revisit this book. It was a nice, but not a standout read. When I picked it up, I saw that it was an “Austentacious romance.” I understood that to mean that it was influenced by Jane Austen and would probably be a witty, light-hearted romance with light angst and a happy ending. I would say that’s mostly the case, (albeit with more angst), but the Jane Austen references were fairly excessive. Every single chapter contains a Jane Austen quote at the beginning, and references throughout. The characters discuss Jane Austen’s novels at length, too. It’s too much.

I’ll add more thoughts later if I have the energy.

This romantic mystery teeters precariously between some dark and serious topics and a rompy period piece of courting and manners. That’s not a bad thing, but a part of me wanted this to lean squarely more in one way than the other. The novel might do itself a slight disservice by aligning so closely with the novels of Jane Austen, which seems meant to create some relevant touch points, but really ends up being unnecessary to the plot. This is less Austen than Fellowes, but  absolutely enjoyable for anyone that enjoys this era.
