"But tell me, child, do we ever escape the evils of the past?"

The Ancestor is the first book I've read by Danielle Trussoni, and I enjoyed it! This book has an intriguing and mysterious start, and I was hooked from the beginning.

This book is a blend of gothic horror and historical fiction with a cryptid storyline. There was a lot to like here. At first, I wasn't wild about the historical fiction parts, but they got more interesting as the book went along.

I had a hard time connecting with the last portion of the book. It wasn't bad, but the tone of the book shifts toward the end, and I had a hard time staying invested. There was a lot of buildup throughout the story, and then it felt like the story kind of played it safe in the end. I'm not sure what I was expecting exactly, but it was something more than what happened. I felt a little let down; however, I really liked this book as a whole & I recommend it. I hope Danielle Trussoni writes more horror in the future!

I don't read thrillers often but when I do, I want it to be a fast-paced one, set in a Gothic castle, disconnected from the rest of the world. This book delivered just what I sought.

THIS NOVEL IS FOR YOU, IF YOU THINK YOU'LL LOVE

- Imaginative account of the mysteries about the mythical monsters sighted in Swiss Alps

- Dan Brown's ‘Da Vinci Code’ like thriller but instead of Vatican conspiracy theories, we are following Darwinian Evolutionary theories.

- Set in a gothic castle in the icy mountains of Alps, disconnected from the rest of the world

- Going through old journals, letters, tomb inscriptions to find out the dark, twisted secrets of the family

- Blend of Science and mystery, without becoming a sci-fi

- 'History repeats itself’ ending instead of the traditional ‘happily ever after’
