The Hunger Games
By Suzanne Collins
5⭐️

This story was gripping from the very first page. Collins gives you a thorough look into the life of Katniss in District 12. You get a real feel for the desperation that comes from just living. Then she introduces the Hunger Games.

During the Hunger Games you meet 24 kids from 12 districts. You see them fighting and trying to survive. Deeper than that though, you get Katniss’s perception and it feels like you are experiencing the challenges along side of her.

This dystopian novel is engaging and it pulls you in to the very core. When you finish you will be ready to pick up the next book in the series.

I read this book along side of my middle school son. We both enjoyed it very much.

This book was every bit as good as I remember it being when I was a teenager, and possibly even more challenging. The premise is so dark and sad, but the characters so loveable it's hard not to enjoy the story.

I love watching the character growth in Peeta and Katniss. I will always cry at that one death. Haymitch is probably my favorite character.

The underlying warnings about a people divided are hard to ignore.

My only real complaint with the book is how stiff Katniss is throughout, even when she knows what's on the line. Maybe it's just because I don't relate to her personality but I found myself rolling my eyes at how obtuse she is at times. However, this definitely doesn't ruin the story for me at all.

This is a classic of dystopian YA, so I wanted to give it a try. It's accessible, fast-paced, emotional and makes you think about inequality. I'd say it's a good read for teens.

I enjoyed
- the campness of the capitol and its people
- the premise and setting (and the added terror of constantly giving a performance in front of your oppressors and loved ones alike)
- the thing with the birds
- the social commentary

Unfortunately, there's a lot more that I didn't like:
- the dialogue felt cringe a lot of the time, a bit like those new edgy Disney characters
- Katniss isn't quite a 'Mary Sue' but her few flaws do not cause her any long-term issues
- the final fight in the arena was so ridiculous that it took away from the emotional impact
- it was quite predictable and the writing felt contrived, almost like watching a video game quest
- too many food descriptions (although I get why)
- convenient coincidences happen ALL the time to further the plot and benefit the main character

If you're a cynical adult like me, I recommend reading The Handmaid's Tale instead or watching Squid Game, Black Mirror, or The Truman Show - or the film adaptation which I actually preferred.

Rereading this series to read the newest book (2020) only to announce they’re adding a fourth in 2025! I forget how much i enjoyed this series as a kid, and it still holds up today. I still critique the use of the love triangle, but i understand why it’s included. Overall still a great, enjoyable read.
