Audiobook
It was ok. The reader has a shaky voice that works for older ladies but made me cringe as it almost seems mockery although not intentional. Otherwise it’s just a book about redemption and amazing circumstances that are fitting for this genre.

A beautifully poignant story THE PRAYER BOX by Lisa Wingate, with a past from one wrong man to another and a controlling one she managed to escape from, as she makes her way to the Outer Banks. (would recommend reading “The Seaglass Sisters- a novella), prior to “The Prayer Box”.

Tandi has no job and no means to support herself and her children and she is trying desperately to start over. She has escaped taking pills to drown her problems from Texas and wants to be a good mother and be a better person.

She managed to find a guest cottage and then the landlord (an elderly woman-Iola Anne – so inspiring and so want her to be my grandmother) dies. Tandi agrees to help clean the house in trade for living in the cottage.

However, Tandi finds letters which began to change her life. The letters give her a glimpse into a world where people share and give without expecting anything in return. She learns about this incredible woman and how her presence affected so many in the town.

She begins to find strangers who become friends, opening their hearts and their lives to her. She has to break her old habits and connections and love unconditionally and allow people into her world, who have her best interest at heart.

This was my first book by Lisa and look forward to reading more! I listened to the audible version and Xe Sands (one of my favorites) was excellent in her performance as was ideal for the older lady and the younger woman voices.

I love the multi-generations of wisdom and the beautiful words which were portrayed through the letters and prayers of the past as a guide to the future.

A book of forgiveness, grace, second chances, and wisdom.

What an intriguing concept and beautiful story. Such a feel good read, full of genuine characters and true to life issues, scenarios and possibilities. I would definitely be curious enough to peak into a pile of ordered boxes. Much incredible history has been discovered throughout time because someone has done just that and fortunately so.
I don’t have prayer boxes as such, but I do love to write and have many journals. I only hope that I can guide my writing to be as mindful and selfless as Iola Anne’s prayer letters.
This book is full of love and emotion. Totally touching.

A little slow to start as i was trying to piece together the MC's history and her current situation as it is slowly revealed throughout the book. A refreshing story of her personal change inspired by a woman leading by example with her life devoted to God as chronicaled through her letters.

The Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate
First wanted to read this book as part of the summer reads for the whole family campaign by JKS communications.
Love the setting for this in the outer banks and she recalls being there with her grandparents, closeby the house that was featured in 'Nights in Rodanthe'. There is also talk of the ship that didn't make ti to shore and the wild ponies.
She has run away from her husband in TX after having suffered an injury from falling from a horse-and she's attempting to get off of pain killers and just drives til she reaches the end of the road. She meets a 90 year old woman who rents her the bungalow out front and she and her teen daughter and younger son live with her.
She's trying to get a job with no luck as it's only April-tourist season won't start for another month or so. After she finds the old woman dead and learns the church will inherit the house and bungalow she agrees to clean the house for the church in lieu of payment for the bungalow.
Tandi also has met a guy there, Ross who house sits and does long haul trucking.
She is determined to just rid the house of all personal possessions til she reads a few of the letters the woman had written to her father. Then she discovers a rosary and knows she must go through every box before just tossing them out.
She has been feeding the cat but she has no idea how he gets in/out of the house and water in the bathroom is running at times-almost like a ghost wants her to do something n a certain room upstairs.
She's been finding so many clues as to who Iola Anne really was, and Zoey her daughter comes down with an illness that will keep her from her many jobs.
Really liked how this book moved along-never a dull moment. Troubles arise when her sister tracks her down and she does cause trouble...
Loved most the seashell store and all the design work, pink and light blue seaglass and what those working there mean to Tandi.
Few characters that are easy to keep track of while others are introduced.
Loved how she fought for what she believed in...
She feels a bond knowing others had to raise her and she finds out why...
I received this book from JKS Communications in exchange for my honest review.

Writing was beautiful, however - Tandi’s character development was not it for me:

- She doesn’t leave douche bag Ross - who not only treats her like crap, but treats her kids like crap - until he sleeps with her sister. Like that was the last straw for you, not him being horrible to your kids?
- I wish her ending didn’t have to be with a guy. It seems like one of her main problems was not being able to stay single - and never focusing on herself or her children. In my opinion, her character growth would’ve been more profound if she stayed single and spent some time bettering herself outside of a man.
- Her just seemingly become an amazing mother over night, and then acting clueless why her kids don’t want anything to do with her.
